IIT-Allahabad offers the state of the art infrastructure to its students and scholars for research purposes.
The Ph. D cell covers under its ambit inviting applications, short listing and giving admission to candidates as research scholars under the departments of Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Management, Cyber Laws and Information Security, Bio-Informatics and Applied Sciences. The Institute has engaged students under a wide range of heads and disciplines within the Information and related technology domain ranging from pure IT fields such as -Soft Computing, artificial intelligence, Graphics animation and multimedia, Data Mining, Wireless and Sensory Networks, Service Oriented Architectures to Electronics and Communication Engineering topics such as VLSI Fiber Optics, Photonics, Robotics, Computer vision and Embedded systems.
The Bio-Informatics Department under its academic concern has research interest in areas like Computational Biology, Structural Biology and Drug Designing, Modeling and Simulations of complex biological structures.
The Applied Sciences Department conducts research in areas like Nano Sciences, Genomics, Bio-electrics and mechanics, Quantum Information, Quantum Optics, Pure and Applied Physics.
The Management, Cyber Law and Information Security division funds its students to join as research scholars for conducting researches in areas that include Finance and Accounting, Operations, E-governance, Strategic and Cross cultural International Management, Project Management and Human Resources.
Candidates with exceptional credits such as a high GATE score, CSIR, JRF, ICAR, DST, INSPIRE Fellowship, publications with good impact factor, prior Publications indicating inclination to Research and development, Software development experience in their areas of interest, or students from institutes of National and International repute are not only encouraged to apply but are giving all possible assistance in their research endeavors in terms of criteria relaxations and funds from state and corporate sponsored projects such as the TCS Research Scholar Program, ISJRP, ISEA and foreign projects like the one involving Carnegie Mellon University and Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Govt. of India just to name a few.
The Human Computer Interaction Department headed by Prof. R.C. Tripathi is responsible for maintaining the Speech and Image Processing Lab and the Graphics and Visual Processing Lab.
Devices like Image tracking systems, Head Mounted Device (HMD), Hand Gloves, 6D mouse, Motion Trackers, Face Trackers, Image Manipulators and Matrox servers which greatly assist in the ongoing researches like CUDA based volume visualization, CUDA multi-person tracking, GPU based focus and Context Visualization, Emotion recognition using CUDA, Multi-person Imaging and Image remote Sensing based on fusion techniques.
The Labs contain 20 computers facilitated with web cams, headphones and trademark databases. 2 IBM Servers and 12 NVIDIA GPU systems are also provided.
The Robotics Deptartment under Prof. G.C. Nandi and Dr. Pawan Chakraborty aim at nurturing the student’s minds towards high quality research in different areas of Information Technology and Complex Artificial Intelligence for making machines that resemble human beings and in near future may take their place.
Technologies that are in use include-
1) Computer Control Systems such as Neuro-Fuzzy Controller, adaptive controller and control based on non-linear dynamics.
2) Wireless Communication with sensor networks RFID and Bluetooth based Communication.
3) Temporal pattern mining and knowledge discovery in Humanoid Robot gestures.
4) Machine intelligence for creating intelligent robots is done using Simulated Annealing, Markov processes, Dynamic Bayesian Network, Artificial Neural network, Fuzzy logic, Genetic algorithm and Support Vector Machines.
The Microelectronics Department headed by Prof. M Radhakrishnan, widely deals in the areas of VLSI Design, its Process Simulation and Systems Design for research motives. Facilities include state-of-the-art electronic devices like Non-volatile low power FPGAs, Mixed Signal FPGAs and Low Power FPGAs from ACTEL and Silvaco TCAD software modeling tools. The Tanner EDA Software tools help in Analog ICs, mixed signal and MEMS Design. Standard and Non standard Electric Motors from Spartan Electronics and from Vertex Electronics Inc. are also kept and made use of during research. Facilities like Wafer cleaning, Oxidation, Photo Lithography, Thermal Oxidation Furnaces, packaging and Metallization are also available.
Application Specific Integrated Circuits (APIC), Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) and Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) are some of the other facilities that are kept in the labs and are exclusively utilized by students and scholars for research purposes.
